We circulate more than 1.5 million items annually, but we believe that a library is more than a place to borrow free materials. Job Summary: The Custodian is responsible for keeping facilities and furnishings in good condition and working order. They perform regular housekeeping to facilities, maintaining safety, cleanliness, and a positive visual appearance.


This is a 40-hour-per-week, non-exempt, at-will role. We may be hiring for up to two positions.


Essential Functions:

  • Maintains awareness of building conditions indicating anticipated or needed repairs and reports such conditions to supervisor. (20%)
  • Checks all restrooms every 2 hours or more as needed for cleanliness and to restock supplies. (20%)
  • Uses the library vehicle to transport library materials and supplies between facilities. (15%)
  • Cleans, dusts, and sweeps staff and public areas. Mops, vacuums, shampoos, steam cleans, waxes, and polishes floors and carpets. (15%)
  • Performs set up of spaces for programs and events. (10%)
  • Cleans public computers, keyboards, and computer mouse devices. (10%)
  • Disposes of trash, recycling, and compost. (10%)

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Orders and maintains inventory of supplies.
  • Sweeps and removes trash from interior and exterior building(s) main entrance(s).
  • Performs light snow and ice removal.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment.
  • Replaces light bulbs and security and safety equipment batteries.


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Skills: Demonstrated reliability in work habits. Experience performing a range of physical and manual tasks, including using tools and equipment for custodial duties, and lifting boxes more than 50 pounds.
  • Technical Experience: Uses various tools and equipment in the performance of custodial and maintenance tasks, including but not limited to small manual tools, long-handled tools, applicators, and mobile cleaning equipment.
  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history and motor vehicle record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with an industrial or janitorial firm and thorough custodial materials and methods knowledge.
  • Speaks and understands at least one language other than English, preferably Spanish.

Work Conditions:

Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job. The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Requires long intervals of standing, walking, bending, and repetitive hand-wrist and elbow–shoulder motion. Must climb ladders up to 10 feet tall and balance.
