Job Description

Position Purpose:

The director of branch operations has the primary responsibility of overseeing all product receiving and distribution activities, including proper sanitary and safe warehousing and storage, for the Barre distribution center of the Vermont Foodbank (VF). The director is a communicator and a motivator who is expected to center the needs of the staff in the day-to-day work, making sure to create an inclusive working environment where all staff can thrive.

The director supports the Foodbank's strategic outcomes of ensuring that everyone in Vermont has equitable access to enough nourishing food every day, everyone in Vermont takes action to eliminate hunger and poverty, and everyone in Vermont has what they need to thrive.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Works cooperatively and be able to communicate with staff and volunteers to support the mission of the Foodbank to meet and sustain Foodbank goals.
  • Positively contribute to an organizational culture of safe and secure food handling, warehousing and distribution.
  • The Foodbank relies on volunteers every day to fulfill our mission. All Foodbank employees must support our culture of philanthropy by treating every volunteer with appreciation and respect.
  • Organize and lead efforts to successfully pass bi-annual food safety audit and participate as a VF Food Safety Team member.
  • Work closely with Director of Facilities & Food Safety to ensure proper food safety and handling in accordance with Feeding America and AIB guidelines.
  • Manage distribution, receipt, and storage of all food products.
  • Ensure VF maintains an accurate inventory control system.
  • Organize and lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end physical inventory process.
  • Responsible for inventory and distribution reporting responsibilities for State and Federal government programs, Feeding America, VF grants, VF-led programs, and more.
  • Work closely with Community Impact department to ensure compliance and efficient operation of VF programs such as Backpack, VeggieVanGo, TEFAP, CSFP, Vermonters Feeding Vermonters, and more.
  • Work closely with Logistics Supervisor to schedule distribution of all incoming products, including trucks, drivers, delivery routes, Roadnet software management, and more.
  • Oversee and organize branch operations workflow on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, including volunteer efforts, sort room operations, incoming and outgoing deliveries, fleet maintenance, vehicle purchasing/leasing, warehouse equipment, and more.
  • Oversee all branch warehouse staff, including scheduling, hiring/firing, performance reviews, creation of professional development and training programs, payroll approval, etc.
  • Participate in bi-weekly self-inspections and take responsibility for repairs or corrections to findings necessary to ensure a safe food handling and working environment.
  • Work closely with Chief Operations Officer and Chief Financial Officer to provide for development and management of the annual operations budget.
  • Work closely with Director of Food Resources to ensure adequate inventory levels, efficient delivery schedules, and transfer of product between distribution centers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with diverse groups of people at all times, including other staff, donors, volunteers and the general public;
  • Exceptional customer service and team skills;
  • Ability to organize, plan and juggle many projects and meet deadlines;
  • Self-motivated and committed to being part of a team and leading a team;
  • Understand and agree with the vision and mission of the VF and be committed to providing services to people facing situation of hunger and poverty;
  • This position will occasionally be required to travel to other Foodbank locations and to attend required meetings, trainings, etc. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected
  • In instances of a federal, state or locally declared emergency, Vermont Foodbank is typically considered an essential service and emergency responder; all its employees may be called in to perform regular or emergent duties.

Other Functions:

  • Ensure cross-training within department so there is appropriate backup for Inventory Control Supervisor, Warehouse Supervisor, and Logistics Supervisor.
  • Keep informed of OSHA and DOT standards updates.
  • Any other duties as assigned by Chief Operations Officer.
