Job Description


An Echocardiography Sonographer is a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer professional who is qualified by professional credentialing and academic and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice of the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer includes those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience, has demonstrated competency and has completed the appropriate ARDMS certification, which is the standard of practice in cardiac ultrasound.

1.  Demonstrates the cognitive skills required to perform comprehensive echocardiograph imaging.
2.  Demonstrates the technical skills and abilities required to perform comprehensive echocardiograph exams.
3.  Demonstrates knowledge, understanding and technical requirements for contrast echocardiography           (LVO,Doppler enhancement, MCE, shunt evaluation).
4. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education: Graduate of an accredited diagnostic medical ultrasound or dedicated echocardiography ultrasound program. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree required. A degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography preferred.
Experience preferred, but will accept new grads.
License/Certification: Credentials from ARDMS or CCI as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS or RCCS) within 12 months of hire. American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider BLS certification required.

The Children’s Heart Center is a rapidly growing program that is ranked nationally by U.S. News & World Report. Five pediatric cardiac sonographers perform transthoracic and fetal echocardiography as required and per training and expertise across the spectrum of congenital and acquired heart disease. Our sonographers rotate through inpatient and outpatient environments, determining the proper technique and positioning to ensure optimal results in accordance with applicable standards, protocols and procedures. Physicians are on site in the units daily and interact directly and closely with the patients and the sonographers. We also provide education in prenatal and postnatal echocardiography diagnosis to University of Virginia fellow physicians and ultrasound students. Our staff works as part of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team of specialists to best care for our patients with high-risk congenital heart disease to optimize their post-surgical outcomes.
