Job Description


The Campus Life Division at Princeton University has received a multi-year monetary gift focusing on undergraduate and graduate student health and wellbeing. This gift supports TigerWell, an initiative that is multi-faceted and involves engaging Campus Life as a whole in promoting wellbeing. University Health Services (UHS) administers TigerWell, which includes skills-building, outreach, events, professional development, and program assessment and evaluation. The TigerWell team, consisting of three Outreach Counselors, the Project Manager, and UHS’s Director of Health Promotion and Prevention Services (HPPS), in coordination with Campus Life leaders, works to bring the vision for the Initiative to reality. The Health Communications Specialist will work collaboratively with the TigerWell team, under the direction of the Project Manager, to meet Initiative goals.

We seek a well-rounded Health Communications Specialist who will lead TigerWell ’s health communication strategies. The Specialist will provide direction, planning, coordination, implementation, evaluation, and continual improvement of these strategies. This portfolio will:

  • inform and influence individual and community decisions that relate to and affect health;
  • promote positive social change related to health across the campus community;
  • increase understanding and awareness of the services provided by Health Promotion and Prevention Services (HPPS), the home department of TigerWell; and
  • engage and support a wide variety of stakeholders (including staff and faculty campus partners, and undergraduate and graduate students).

The specialist will be an experienced communicator with energy and interest to manage multiple priorities and complex projects. In addition, they will be an educator who understands the university as a unique setting for social education and personal development; an advocate with a passion for individual and community wellbeing; and a person with sensitivity to issues of social justice and inclusion who welcomes the opportunity to engage with a wide variety of stakeholders.

Communications Materials (50%)


  • Apply best practices in health communication to design and implement materials that promote individual and community health and wellbeing and positive culture change within the campus community
  • Develop and coordinate the production and dissemination of information for the TigerWell initiative
  • Develop ideas for written material to be presented in a variety of formats (e.g., flyers, reports, web-based materials, forms, email messages, publications)
  • Design and participate in design of materials
  • Edit and proof materials as final preparation for publication and distribution
  • Implement and share in ongoing development of TigerWell’s web presence
  • Work with vendors and consultants as needed
  • Maintain records and archives, as appropriate

Planning and Consultation (40%)

  • Provide leadership for short-term and longer-term strategic planning around needs, opportunities, challenges, and priorities for the TigerWell Initiative’s communications
  • Provide consultation to and collaborate with campus partners in developing materials that support their programmatic efforts
  • Design, manage, and evaluate health communication campaigns; use evidence-based strategies including social marketing; determine appropriate channels for different populations and create effective messages that are tailored to the intended audience(s)
  • Conduct research to identify communication goals and audiences, clarify content, and identify appropriate venues and design
  • Ensure consistency of messaging and non-duplication of communication efforts around campus wellbeing, in consultation with Health Promotion and Prevention Services (HPPS)
  • Consult with University Health Services (UHS) staff, as appropriate

Other Administrative Responsibilities, as Assigned (10%)

  • Participate in other initiatives, projects, and activities, as assigned by the TigerWell Project Manager, the Director of Health Promotion and Prevention Services, or in partnership with other Campus Life staff.
  • Represent TigerWell in campus committees, working groups, meetings, and programs, as needed.


Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, health education, journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, or related field plus 2-3 years of work experience developing communication materials in health communications, public relations, journalism, student affairs, or social marketing or Associate’s degree in relevant field plus 5 or more years of relevant work experience
  • Robust computer skills and advanced working knowledge of web-based technology, social media, survey instruments, graphics, publication and media presentation software (i.e. Adobe Creative suite, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office suite), as well as competency with web design and development for mobile devices
  • Knowledge of inclusive practices in health communication
  • Superb and diverse writing and editing skills, particularly the ability to write with clarity, accuracy, and brevity; demonstrated skill in translating complex topics into clear, lively, and straightforward prose; keen eye for detail as well as careful attention to tone and quality of writing; ability to convey content in culturally responsive ways to varied audiences
  • Excellent organizational and stewardship skills, including ability to handle multiple complex projects, a busy schedule, and concurrent deadlines
  • Understanding of best practices for communicating with particular audiences (e.g., undergraduate students, graduate students, staff and faculty campus partners, communities of shared cultural identities)
  • Strong innovative and strategic thinking in message/campaign development and coordination
  • Demonstrated ability and strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with individuals and groups with a wide array of backgrounds, identities, life experiences and communication styles
  • Experienced as a collaborative teammate, who thrives working with and for others as needed to support organizational priorities and opportunities
  • Track record of success in being flexible and working independently and creatively to identify opportunities, challenges, and solutions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree, preferably in public health, health education, journalism, communications, public relations, marketing. Related fields will also be considered.
  • 3 or more years of experience in health-related communication (e.g., college health, public health, community health)
  • Experience with report writing and design
  • Experience conducting and utilizing research and interviews to enrich communications
