Position Title: Maintenance Technician

Department: Maintenance Department

Grade Range/Job Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt-Hourly

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Typical Schedule: Primarily M-F Days, 6 am – 4 pm. (40 hours per week) Must occasionally be willing and able to work flexible hours/days, including evenings and weekends, reflective of the dynamic schedule of the organization. Occasional on-call duties.

Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician maintains and provides repairs at Hammer Residences' group homes and central offices in Wayzata and White Bear Lake. All employees are expected to center, model, and champion Hammer's core values: Person-Centered, Relational, Opportunistic, and Stewardship.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Home Maintenance
  • Provide and implement necessary maintenance for organization owned group homes throughout the Twin Cities including:
  • Performing minor fixes such as repairing broken locks, filling gaps on walls etc.
  • Check control panels and electrical wiring to identify issues.
  • Assist in the preparation of vacant rooms for new residents.
  • Install appliances and equipment and/or oversee outside vendor installation. Assess and repair appliances as needed.
  • Ensuring home compliance with fire regulations, and health & safety measures.
  • Implement preventative maintenance measures as needed. Monitor property for any repairs or replacements that may arise.
  • Complete work requests for common areas and apartment units as assigned.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot equipment and systems (e.g., ventilation)
  • Check functionality of safety systems (e.g., fire alarm)
  • Effective relationships and positive interactions with residents and staff within our houses/apartments.
  1. Vehicle Maintenance
  • Provide minor routine mechanical maintenance on the organization's owned vehicles.
  • Track vehicle mileage regularly.
  • Transport vehicles to designated mechanics when issues arise.
  1. Basic Housekeeping
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety at east and west central offices, as assigned.
  • Provide routine cleaning, vacuuming, restocking paper goods and wipe down surfaces as needed.
  • Paint general office upkeep to furniture and paint offices as needed to refresh.


Essential Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Prior experience required providing facilities, home, and vehicle maintenance for an organization. Formal, informal, and cross-disciplinary experiences will be considered.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and an ability to perform routine building and ground maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • General knowledge of and experience using maintenance related tools, and equipment.
  • Experience and ability performing physical work throughout an 8 – 10-hour shift including:
  • Kneel, crouching, stooping, climbing stairs/ladders.
  • Push and pull heavy objects (with assistance, wheels, etc.) .
  • Lift up to 75 pounds throughout a shift.
  • Use hand(s) to grasp, pull, manipulate tools, machinery, and other objects.
  • The ability to work above ground level.
  • Move from numerous work sites throughout the workday, transporting tools, as well as equipment.
  • Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that meets insurance requirements; ability to drive an organizational vehicle.
  • Must be cleared by a background check through the MN Department of Human Services.
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read technical manuals and drawings.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively throughout the organization; must be fluent reading and speaking English.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products, (Teams, Outlook, Word)
  • Manage multiple service requests and priorities to ensure work is completed in a timely and productive manner.
