Student Health Services is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Dietitian to join our team! In this role, you will provide nutritional care to university students with specific health needs.

This is a 60% time (24 hours per week), partial-year career position with a 12-week unpaid summer work break and full benefits.

Positions with summer work breaks include regularly scheduled non-work periods during which the Dietitian remains an employee, retains health benefits, and is not actively working or receiving pay.

    UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological support to UCSC students.     JOB SUMMARY

    Under the general supervision of the Associate Medical Director, the Dietitian is assigned programmatic responsibility for providing counseling regarding appropriate medical nutritional therapy to patients with eating disorders, diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel disease, food allergies and sensitivities, weight reduction, and special diets as well as other medical nutrition needs.

    APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    Budgeted Salary: $75,764.50 - $90,366.25/annually at 60% = $3,788.22 - $4,518.31/monthly for 9 months. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

    JOB DUTIES

    85% - Clinical Care

    Provides medical nutritional therapy via direct primary care appointments with individual patients and documents visits in the electronic medical record (EMR).

    Collaborates with patients to create nutrition plans, evaluate patient resources and capabilities, tracking progress.

    Manages and tracks complex eating disorder cases, exercising considerable independence.

    Manages and tracks nutritional therapy for complex diabetic patients who are on multiple treatments.

    Consults with and advises medical providers and pharmacists on diagnoses, management, and diet, including supplements, vitamins and minerals, and nutritional product recommendations.

    Contributes as part of the healthcare team to evaluate current programs and products.

    5% - Member of Interdisciplinary Health Team

    Serves as the sole dietitian for the UCSC Interdisciplinary Eating Disorder Team, collaborating with clinical staff and community members, as appropriate, to review individual cases, make recommendations, and create treatment plans.

    Serves as consulting dietitian for UCSC Student Diabetes Support Group.

    5% - Outreach

    Provides in-service training for UCSC Dining Services staff on current nutritional topics and acts as a professional resource as needed.

    Acts as a resource for Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP) regarding nutrition.

    Educates campus populations, including faculty, staff, and student groups on current nutritional topics through speaking engagements; Collaborates with UCSC Risk Services for one-on-one consultation regarding healthy living programs for staff.

    Assists patients with food security issues.

    Provides assistance to campus units with the availability of reliable data and studies on nutrition, its interpretation, and use.

    5% - Development of Policies and Procedures

    Prepares and develops guidelines, policies, and procedures on medical nutritional therapy, including templates and handouts for and in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

    Prepares and provides resources to patients and staff, including but not limited to diet education materials.

    Stays informed on all new and evolving theories and practices in medical nutritional therapy.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Foods and Nutrition/Dietetics
    • Registered Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
    • Excellent oral communication skills, excellent listening skills
    • Excellent written communication skills
    • Ability to receive and give clear and concise information to diverse groups of people; ability to document patient communications, recommendations, actions and follow up
    • Ability to counsel and instruct patients on food preparation, dining, healthy weight and exercise
    • Ability to teach patients regarding the sequela of anorexia and bulimia
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
    • Ability to work under pressure with time constraints
    • Demonstrated flexibility and organizational and leadership skills with an ability to prioritize a high volume workload and function independently
    • Ability to work on several tasks concurrently with frequent interruptions
    • Ability to work and communicate in a positive and cooperative manner with management and supervisory staff, medical staff, co-workers and other health care professionals, as well as patients and their families, when providing information or services, and/or helping when others are seeking assistance, clarification and/or problem resolution
    • Ability to contribute to a team effort; participate in a positive and cooperative manner during meetings; respond well to supervision
    • Ability to handle difficult, sensitive and confidential situations tactfully Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Experience and background as a dietitian with 3-5 years of experience
    • Experience in medical nutritional therapy consultation on Eating Disorders which involves counseling on dining out, nutrition, food preparation and the sequela of anorexia and bulimia
    • Experience in student and/or adolescent health regarding nutritional health
    • Experience with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system/s


    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    • Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre-hire criminal history background check and a pre-hire credentialing check.
    • Registered Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
    • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
    • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
    • Selected candidate will be required to take a TB test within 60 days of hire.
    • Will be required to complete HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility) training within 30 days of hire.
    • Will be required to comply with current Student Health Center employee health safety requirements for health care workers as defined by state and federal regulatory agencies; current health safety requirements to be discussed during interview.
    • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
